Guillermo Velasco R. > Art Gallery Oils > Abstractions

MONTEZUMA, MOCTEZUMA
Oil on canvas, 12 x 12", 2006

Guillermo Velasco thatches paintings, short parallel stroked meshes of color that come together to create the impression of an overall pattern. Within this nest of paint he goes on to nest further, inner images, hidden symbols, like dreams within dreams. While the paintings tend to move left and right, north and south, and diagonally on the surface, flat, stuff pokes up through the cane seating of these paintings. All kinds of stuff. Stuff we can’t know, but we know just because of the paintings. This is the language he speaks gently in paint, like quietly speaking in tongues. Abstraction as code, yes, but more importantly, as sweet poetry.
